Still plugging away - current WIP for Thomson TO8, TO8D, TO9, TO9+ stands as follows:

Applications [FD] - 28
Applications [K7] - 1
Compilations - Applications [FD] - 2
Compilations - Educational [FD] - 2
Compilations - Games [FD] - 55
Coverdisks - 4
Diskmags [FD] - 10
Demos [FD] - 10
Educational [FD] - 55
Games [FD] - 104
Games [K7] - 5
System [FD] - 1

Bit of a backlog after 5 years of inactivity - at latest count ~4GB / 5,000 new files still to be looked at, and I'm just grabbing another cache of old files from an FTP. Guaranteed there will be a significant amount of duplication across various sites / archives, but there should be plenty to keep me out of trouble for a while

Cheers Maddog! I should emphasise that I am no expert here, and that I know very little about a lot of these systems as well. In some cases, I don't have much to go on other than that Bitsavers have got disk images / tape dumps and scans of the labels, and I've done enough digging around to verify the names of the systems.

Planning to do a full breakdown of what some of these systems are around release time, with links to info, scans of ads, etc. There's some really interesting stuff in there. The Micro Craft Dimension is a particular favourite - with coprocessor boards it could apparently run IBM MS-DOS, CP/M, Apple II and UNIX software - http://www.atarimagazines.com/creative/v11n4/38_Dimension_a_68000_muscle.php

Something of a small birthday treat for myself, having recently turned [redacted].

The Sega Megadrive was the first console I ever owned, and it's got a special place in my heart to this day. While I love working on obscure systems I've never encountered (and likely never will encounter) in real life, it made me sad to see the Genesis / Megadrive dats languishing.

So, over the past month, I've done a bit of work. I'm pleased to let you all know that as of the next release there should be 879 new files in the Genesis / MD dats.

This is very much just a first step, and should bring those dats more or less up to date with the known dumps for the system. Next phase (already begun) is working slowly through the dats and adding more accurate publisher / date info, correctly marking pirate carts, etc. I've also created a new "Compilations" dat, which has several new additions and I'm slowly moving compilation carts across to that as well.

As with all the work TOSEC does, this is nowhere near done. There are literally thousands if not tens of thousands of hacks, translations, etc. out there still to be found, properly renamed and added, not to mention a whole lot of retail carts, protos etc. for which dumps have yet to be 100% verified. This is very much a first step towards modernising the Sega dats.

I can't speak for the whole team, but I certainly would welcome help from other people with an interest in this (or any other) system. It's taken me the best part of a month, working in my free time, to add what are (for the most part) easily checked / verified, known dumps of retail carts and known protos. Getting through all the other stuff out there - some of which will require deep research to identify beyond "yet another unknown Sonic hack" / "misc unlabeled proto" - could take years. More eyes on this stuff, more people submitting corrections and additions, all helps things along.

There will be mistakes in these dats, there will be missing info. If you can help, let me know - I want these dats (and everything else in TOSEC) to be the best they can be.

Just a wee addendum to the above - if anyone's interested, there's still plenty of low-hanging fruit out there. Most of the console dats need to be brought up-to-date with No-Intro / MAME software lists, for example, and a lot of that stuff is really well-documented (certainly the MAME XMLs tend to contain quite a few notes as to what's known vs. unverified). Even on the computer side of things, which tends to be a bit more fragmented and hard to verify, I've been religiously grabbing the Apple II 4am cracks (to give one example) from archive.org with the intention of doing something with them at some point, and you basically couldn't ask for a better documented and verified set of disk dumps.

Essentially, if you want to get involved, there's no barrier to entry for a lot of this stuff. Hell, I don't even speak French beyond a basic high school level, and I've managed to dig through a lot of the (almost exclusively French) Thomson stuff. Admittedly, some of the Asian stuff and the Russian / Eastern European stuff could really use the attention of someone who knows the language / culture / history, but beyond that basically pick a system you like the look of and crack at it. There's plenty to go around.

Don't worry about making mistakes either - the team here is excellent and has always been on hand to help with stupid questions (and, some years into this, I still have a lot of stupid questions!). Nothing is unfixable, either - I've had quite a few little errors from the last release spotted by eagle-eyed helpers, and all that will be fixed next time around.

I believe the tradition is to finish with a call to action, so here it is - get involved!

Working through the MD / Genesis dats to update with accurate release dates, publisher info, etc. Going to use this to log the stuff that's getting moved about.

Note that I have just included the first entry for each set of files e.g. Arcade Classics (1996)(Sega)(US) being moved also counts the h/h2 files.

Moved from Games to Compilations
Code: [Select]
12 in 1 (19xx)(-)[p]
3 in 1 (19xx)(-)[p]
4 in 1 (19xx)(-)[p]
Arcade Classics (1996)(Sega)(US)

Moved from Games to Educational
Code: [Select]
Barney's Hide & Seek Game (1993-06-01)(Sega)(US)

I feel like I've been banging on about this for a while, so last post on this subject for a while, but tonight's endeavours should give a short example of the kind of time-consuming stuff I was talking about in earlier posts.

Working my way through the Genesis games dat, I come to "CrazyBus v0.1 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)", and notice that almost all the versions are listed simply as either 2004 or 2005. A bit of Googling takes me to an old DevSter news archive. This looks to have more-or-less accurate release dates for v0.3 and v0.8, but not much else. So far so good, but the DAT will look a bit weird with just a few of the versions having proper release dates.

But of course there's a link to the site - which is down (as one might expect from a 2004-era PD Genesis site). Off to web.archive.org we go, last great refuge of historical dumpster-divers. A quick look through the various saved pages reveals that v0.7 definitely appears sometime between August and October 2004. Not great info, but provisionally mark v0.7 as 2004-10.

Sometimes, though, sometimes - not nearly often enough - archive.org preserves the binary files as well as the web pages. Hoping against hope, I try a few download links - and they work! Not all of them, but hopefully across all the saved versions of the site there might be something. Luck holds out, and a number of the various source code releases have working download links.

Nothing guaranteed yet, but a quick trawl through the archives reveals that... yes, the v1.1 source has a history.txt file, containing exact release dates all the way back to v0.1! We have our data!

I'm sure this doesn't sound like much, but it's taken at least a couple of hours to dig out accurate release info for a few versions of a measly PD rom that almost nobody cares about. And yet, I can't describe how satisfying it feels to know that that work has led from this:

Code: [Select]
CrazyBus v0.1 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.2 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.3 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.4 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.5 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.6 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.7 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.8 (2004)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)
CrazyBus v1.0 (2005)(Maneiro, Tom)(es)(PD)

To this:

Code: [Select]
CrazyBus v0.1 (2004-08)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.2 (2004-08)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.3 (2004-08-16)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.4 (2004-08-19)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.5 (2004-08-20)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.6 (2004-08-22)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.7 (2004-08-24)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v0.8 (2004-11-27)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)
CrazyBus v1.0 (2005-09-09)(Maneiro, Tom)(VE)(PD)

I've also got what looks like a never-included v1.1 release (from the version history, 0.9 appears to have been skipped entirely) and, as you can see, have verified the country of origin as well (Venezuela - note to @PandMonium that we need a new country code in TNC).

The one thing I haven't yet been able to verify, annoyingly, is the correct spelling of the guy's name! DevSter has it as both "Maneiro" and "Maniero", and I haven't found any attribution yet in his own files to confirm either way.

As promised, last time I'll bang on about it for a while, but this is the kind of stuff that takes up the time and can really benefit from having an extra pair of hands or two. Hopefully you've all enjoyed a little insight into where all these name / date / etc. changes come from with each new release
